Your time and resources are valuable, and your progress and relief often couldn’t come soon enough. Read on to better understand the therapeutic process and how to get the most out of therapy at Journey Family Counseling.
How Will It Begin?
In your first session, called your intake appointment, you and your therapist will spend time getting to know each other. It can be tempting to jump right into solutions, but the more you and your therapist understand each other, the better they can share relevant tools and help you gain meaningful insights to progress on your journey.
As you continue with therapy, you will also set clinical goals that align with the outcomes you hope for in your life.
How to Get the Most Out of Your Time in Therapy
Vulnerability
Letting someone into the vulnerable details of your life can be scary. As you open up about the challenges leading to your symptoms, you will gain insight and learn tools tailored to your specific needs.
Advocate
Your therapist is your partner on your journey of healing and growth, but you are the expert on your life. You know your journey better than anyone else. Your therapist has many tools and approaches to help you and will always do their best to meet you where you are. If at any point you feel you need to focus on a different topic or use different tools, speak up! By advocating for your needs and sharing your thoughts during therapy, your therapist can adapt more quickly to support your progress.
Learn and Record
Everyone learns and processes information differently, but as you gain new insights, find a way to record and remember them. Therapy sessions are often scheduled weekly or biweekly, so reviewing your insights and practicing any tools shared will help you stay on track.
Patience With Yourself and the Process
It takes time to learn how to effectively use new tools, establish deep change, and let insights fully sink in—so be patient with yourself and the process. Momentum will also be your friend! As you attend consistently and prioritize your therapeutic journey, you will build momentum and experience change more quickly.
Whether you are an existing client or someone considering therapy, we are grateful you are here and wish you all the best on your journey to healing, peace, and growth. Always reach out if you have any questions!
